About The HAB

The HAB is a social enterprise founded by a team of students from Wageningen University & Research, combining space-inspired innovation with climate-smart agriculture.
We won the first prize in the global student challenge "Rethink Food Challenge 2025", organized by Wageningen University & Research. To address a pressing issue in the food system using space technology, we proposed AstroGel – a seaweed-based substrate for indoor farming in the Netherlands that replaces peat substrate.
Our Mission
At The HAB, we envision habitats—from homes to Earth and beyond—as interconnected ecosystems. By designing circular, regenerative systems, we strive to sustain life and ensure a flourishing future for all. Problem: Urban dwellers often face challenges such as limited access to affordable, healthy foods, long and inefficient food supply chains, and a lack of awareness about where their food comes from. These factors contribute to higher costs, poor nutrition, and a growing disconnection between people and sustainable food production methods.
